What comes first, the design or the chair?
Ah, that age-old, philosophical question…maybe that’s just me? Sometimes inspiration strikes on hearing a song; a design comes to mind and then it’s a mad hunt to find the right piece to showcase the design. Sometimes, as in this case, I’ll find an old chair that needs some love and sit in it until I get inspired.
I found this cute little telephone chair on Facebook Marketplace. She was looking a bit flat, with rusty studs and threadbare mustard velvet upholstery.
I love the design process, taking inspiration from music and art and running with it to create something truly unique and personal. And if you’re thinking of telephones in music, how can it not be Blondie? Call Me or Hanging On The Telephone, take your pick.
This telephone chair features a beautified punk aesthetic (much like Ms Harry herself), Warhol references and the first application of my signature halftone portrait fabric to the outside. The frame was completely stripped back, given some TLC and lick of black paint, and a custom-made part Warhol, part Sex Pistols print decoupaged to the tabletop.
This baby has already sold, but the Debbie Halftone Portrait (as seen on the outside of this piece) are available on prints and cushions.
And because everyone loves a good before and after pic, enjoy!
